Many refugee women lack formal work experience when they first arrive. Creating Refuge candles is a good first step in gaining experience outside of the home. Oftentimes, volunteers and refugees work together to create the candles – giving refugees the opportunity to practice and refine their English skills.
Money raised from candle sales directly impacts lives and goes towards:
- Finding and furnishing homes for refugees.
- Helping refugees secure full-time jobs within the first 90 days of arriving.
- Teaching English as a second language.
- Creating a support network for refugees by helping them integrate into the Omaha community.
I like coming to do candles. I learn how to make them. I learn English and talk to friends.
