EMPLOYMENT & ORIENTATION
Employment Readiness Training and Cultural Orientation is a mandatory 2-week program clients must attend before meeting for job seeking assistance. Week one of the curriculum covers cultural orientation on a variety of topics each day of housing, health, education, parenting, civics, and public safety. Week two of the curriculum includes:
- Employment cultural orientation
- Working in the United States, paying and filing taxes
- How to get a job, keep a job, and properly quit a job
- Employment options, transferring overseas work skills
- Problem solving, common issues encountered at work
- Role playing real life situations on the job and interview skills
After completion of the 2-week training, clients receive a referral to Employment Services. Employment Services are provided by trained, former refugee, multi-lingual employment caseworkers to provide:
- Documentation of work history and skills assessment
- Preparation of household budget, monthly expenses, assessment of hourly wage needed to pay expenses and financial literacy/money management
- Preparation of employment plan (removal of barriers, goals, objectives)
- Referrals to English Language Training, Drivers Education, other training as needed
- Transportation and interpretation
- Other (resume creation, job leads, assistance with completing and following up on job applications, job placement assistance)
- Employer and new hire follow-up, transition and compliance, troubleshooting employment issues, employer cultural assistance and training, as needed
Additional components of the Employment Readiness Training including the following training sessions:
Household Budgeting and Financial Literacy: We partner with banks around Omaha to create and teach a class curriculum with hands-on experience in basic bank information, including balancing a checkbook, maintaining a family budget, paying bills on time, and additional information to ensure the refugee client has a solid grasp on managing finances in order to assist in achieving economic self-sufficiency.
Health Education: Public health awareness outreach led by a variety of local health providers as well as college students, Douglas County Health Department, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Clarkson College, and Nebraska Methodist College.
Public Transportation: Since 2010, we have been assisting our refugee clients in learning to use the Metro public transportation system. Caseworkers arrive at the client’s home, help them find the nearest bus stop, and explain and show the bus routes, how to get on the bus, transfer, and arrive at a destination.
